Livestock guardians are a very old class of dogs, who make it their mission to protect their flocks. Many of them are large dogs, with coats resistant to the elements or corded to help defend them from scrub brush and wolves. These dogs are independent and often aloof and will fiercely protect what they believe is theirs. Unlike herding dogs, they do not require cues from a handler and do their job on their own. They are not herding dogs, although some may be trained to follow instruction, but they will keep their herd together. They are calm around their charges and will often sleep with the herd even from puppyhood! These tasks may be merged (per Alex's opinion) since livestock are large petz sometimes and may make an image /enormous/. Movement is not as important as intent; hexed breeds will not be penalized for funky movement. Please no eyeshines or flashy enhancements. Collars and bandanas are okay; some dogs may even wear a spiked collar to protect their throats from wolves! Tasks demonstrated by three Swaledale Sheep from Supernova and by Aniko, a kuvasz. Observe the Herd Dog will be calm and be watching their flock. Focus should not be on handler. Calm around Herd Dog will be sitting or laying, showing comfort with the flock. Dog may be awake or sleep, or with tongue out. Focus should not be on handler. Defense of Herd Dog will show aggression at a target (may be another dog or nothing in frame as in example), showing willingness to defend the flock from all unwanted visitors.
